The workshop, titled “Hands On with Today’s Forest Insects and Diseases“, is sponsored by the Granite State Division of the Society of American Foresters, the N.H. Division of Forests and Lands, and the U.S. Forest Service. Participants will tour in small groups through a rotation of seven stations at the Fox Research and Demonstration Forest.  At each station there will be a unique set of insects or diseases that a specialist will show participants, followed by moderated discussions of how these pests influence forest management. Participants are encouraged to bring their own samples or pictures of pests or damage they’re seeing in the woods; workshop leaders will ID the culprits.

Station 1:  Caliciopsis pinea, Kyle Lombard, Forest Health Program Manager, NH Division of Forests and Lands

Kyle will provide samples of infected logs, infested seedlings and saplings, and show lumber cut from  infected trees.  There are new findings related to how this disease is vectored and management guidelines will be introduced.

Station 2: Hemlock problems, Jen Weimer, Forest Health Specialist, NH Division of Forests and Lands                   Jen will show samples of elongate hemlock scale, hemlock woolly adelgid, and the Sirococcus hemlock tip blight.  The combination of these pests is now killing trees in southern New Hampshire and it’s important to know the differences between them and the control options.

Station 3: “What is that?”, Dode Gladders, Extension Educator-Forester, UNH Cooperative Extension Dode will have hands on samples of all those insects and diseases you walk by in the woods and say “what is that?”  Stuff like balsam woolly adelgid, pine bark adelgid, leaf galls, sugar maple borer, and oh so much more.

Station 4:  Pine needle damage, Isabel Munck Ph.D., Plant Pathologist, US Forest Service, and Cameron McIntire, Ph.D Candidate, UNH.   Isabel and Cameron will show signs and symptoms of various needle blights that have caused defoliation and yellowing in pine.  A discussion of ongoing research related to potentially mitigating silviculture practices will take place.

Station 5:  Forest Tent Caterpillar (FTC) and other defoliators, Barbara Schultz, Forest Health Program Manager, Vermont Dept. of Forests, Parks and Recreation.

Barbara will have samples of various relevant defoliating insects including forest tent caterpillar and other insects that are common this year. Topics include monitoring for FTC and recommendations for control and management strategies during an outbreak.

Station 6:  Root rots and stem decay, Nicholas Brazee, Ph.D., UMASS Extension Plant Pathologist. Nick will demonstrate methods of evaluating internal tree decay and show a variety of fruiting structures seen in the woods. He’ll explain what decay fungi they’re associated with and discuss ways to minimize incidence of occurrence in your forest.

Station 7:  Emerald Ash Borer Management, Bill Davidson, Forest Health Specialist, NH Division of Forests and Lands At this stop Bill will have samples of various life stages of EAB, damaged ash trees, and examples of blonded ash trees. Topics include silviculture recommendations, pesticide options, survey methods, quarantine  requirements, and bio-control programs.

The workshop’s fee, including lunch, is $45. (No person shall be denied the opportunity to participate in this program because of inability to pay.)

The workshop has been approved for 4.0 SAF Category 1 CFEs, and 8.0 NHPLP Certification CEUs
