The American Chestnut Foundation will hold a Chestnut Chat on American Chestnut Restoration & Reintroduction Plantings on Friday, August 7th at 11:30 am EDT

In 2007, the Southern Research Station of the U.S. Forest Service began collaborating with TACF and The University of Tennessee to launch a large-scale reintroduction project in forests of the southern Appalachians. More than 4,000 seedlings have been planted in 15 sites across three states. These plantings have been evaluated annually for survival, growth, competitive ability, and of course, blight resistance.

Following more than a decade of research, we have learned that restoration of the American chestnut will require more than a blight-resistant tree. Knowledge on seedling production, silvicultural treatments, competition control, animal browse damage, and the ability to leverage existing resources will be crucial to restore this iconic tree to the 200 million acres it once occupied.

USFS Research Forester Stacy Clark will share the results and details of this ground-breaking research during TACF’s next live Chestnut Chat this Friday at 11:30AM (EDT). Be sure to stick around following her presentation to participate in the Q&A session.
