Fabric of Life will hold a Logs to Lumber: Timber Harvest workshop at their farm in Shelburne, Mass on March 23 – 24.

This Spring, develop real wood-working skills in this combined six day educational immersion as we work together with local artisans to select, harvest, saw, carve, and raise a new structure made of wood from our forest. In part one of this workshop we will learn to harvest and cut trees from our forest.

This 2 day workshop will introduce you to the entire process of converting trees into lumber.

Learn how to select trees for a purpose, fell trees safely and accurately, haul timber with horses, saw timber into lumber, stack and store lumber properly, and understand properties of wood.  Portions will be taught by:

Selecting/Felling/Hauling – Percheron Horse Team, Kurt Benson  & Chris Porrovecchio of Foxbard Farm in Shelburne, Massachusetts

Sawing – Jay and James Clark of J Team Sawmill in South Deerfield, Massachusetts

Stacking/Storing/Understanding – Jeremy Topitzer  of Lyonsville Carpenters in Colrain, Massachusetts

Participants will learn how to:

  • Select trees for a purpose
  • Hauling with farm animals
  • Logs to lumber
  • Sawing logs for optimal use
  • Stacking and storing logs

  • Forest botany

Note: Due to the outdoor nature of this event, in case of inclement weather, Timber Harvest Weekend Rain Dates will be March 30-31.
