Fabric of Life will hold a Logs to Lumber: Timber Harvest workshop at their farm in Shelburne, Mass on March 23 – 24.
This Spring, develop real wood-working skills in this combined six day educational immersion as we work together with local artisans to select, harvest, saw, carve, and raise a new structure made of wood from our forest. In part one of this workshop we will learn to harvest and cut trees from our forest.
This 2 day workshop will introduce you to the entire process of converting trees into lumber.
Learn how to select trees for a purpose, fell trees safely and accurately, haul timber with horses, saw timber into lumber, stack and store lumber properly, and understand properties of wood. Portions will be taught by:
Selecting/Felling/Hauling – Percheron Horse Team, Kurt Benson & Chris Porrovecchio of Foxbard Farm in Shelburne, Massachusetts
Sawing – Jay and James Clark of J Team Sawmill in South Deerfield, Massachusetts
Stacking/Storing/Understanding – Jeremy Topitzer of Lyonsville Carpenters in Colrain, Massachusetts
Participants will learn how to:
- Select trees for a purpose
- Hauling with farm animals
- Logs to lumber
- Sawing logs for optimal use
- Stacking and storing logs
- Properties of wood
- Forest botany
Note: Due to the outdoor nature of this event, in case of inclement weather, Timber Harvest Weekend Rain Dates will be March 30-31.
To keep this program accessible, we are offering a sliding scale fee: $85 covers the absolute basics of what it costs to run this program and to provide fresh fare for lunches, all other amounts up to $115 affords us those things while also providing the opportunity for continued accessible pricing for this and all of our programs. Please pay what you can.
