The 1,400 acre Muddy Brook Wildlife Management Area in Hardwick supports one of the most important landscapes in inland Massachusetts for the conservation of rare and highly specialized elements of biodiversity.
The Ecological Landscape Alliance will hold a Muddy Brook WMA EcoTour on Friday, October 4th from 10 am to Noon.
This tour with Chris Buelow, Senior Restoration Ecologist for Mass Wildlife, will focus on the history, ecology and ongoing restoration of the fire-influenced natural communities on the site.
The tour will discuss the role of fire on landscapes, the impacts of fire exclusion on historically fire-influenced landscapes, and how targeted restoration and adaptive management techniques have resulted in the Muddy Brook Valley reemerging as a landscape of regional biodiversity significance following nearly a century of ecological degradation due to fire exclusion. The lessons taken from the work at Muddy Brook WMA can be applied to sites with similar compositions and histories across our region.
