Biomass Thermal Energy Council

The Biomass Thermal Energy Council will present a U. S. Wood Chip Heating Fuel Quality Standard webinar on June 6th from 3 to 4:30 pm to discuss the recently adopted ASABE AD17225-4 U. S. Wood Chip Heating Fuel Quality Standard and how it can be applied by fuel producers, biomass boiler manufacturers, or wood chip fuel consumers.

Until recently, wood chip fuel used in residential & commercial heating was the only major heating fuel that was not subject to a technical quality standard in the United States. In 2017, a coalition of allied interests, including the Biomass Energy Resource Center, the Biomass Thermal Energy Council, the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, and Innovative Natural Resource Solutions LLC secured funding support from the USDA Forest Service to promulgate a national wood chip heating fuel quality standard. This standard has now been formally adopted and can be applied to fuel production, procurement and use across the U.S.

Broad adoption of a technical fuel quality standard will lead to better and tighter boiler engineering around known fuel quality, which will lead to better performance and help accelerate market adoption of this renewable heating fuel and technology. A wood chip heating fuel quality standard is essential to improve the performance, efficiency, and reliability of wood chip heating systems and enhance the technical credibility and market confidence that will help expand the wood chip heating market.

Additional information about the standard can be found at www.woodchipstandard.org

Presenters at the webinar will include:

  • Adam Sherman, Manager, Biomass Energy Resource Center of the Vermont Energy Investment Corporation, Burlington VT
  • Jean Walsh, Standards Administrator, American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, St. Joseph MI
  • Jim Dooley, PhD., P.E., Chief Technology Officer, Forest Concepts, Auburn WA
