The Vermont Forestry Foundation will hold a Regeneration Harvesting in a Challenging Environment silviculture workshop featuring several systems in Cavendish, Vermont on  May 31st from 8:30 AM-3:30 PM.

The workshop will review the shelterwood system and its variations in white pine, along with group and single tree selection in northern hardwoods in Cavendish VT on two lots, with only one parking stop.

The main attraction is the lands of the Stowell Family. Deryl was a top-notch logger, who passed away a few years ago. He was perpetually thinning a couple hundred acres of pine, so it is effectively shelterwood densities with mixed regen, including some pine. We have done a bit of group removal, and more distinct shelterwood groups for establishment. (They want to move toward uneven aged management -and Bill Leak hates the idea of “shelterwood groups” until he sees them.) There are some large patches of pine storm damage from about 6 years ago that were salvaged. There is also northern hardwood with oak and spruce where we did real groups, with some harvest between groups.

Next door, is a lot Deryl cut more aggressively over 30+ years, basically a deferred shelterwood, where we did the overstory removal recently along with other treatments.
