UNH Cooperative Extension, the NH Division of Forests & Lands, and the Granite State Division of SAF will hold an Ecology & Management of Northern Red Oak workshop on Friday, June 18th from 8 am to 3 pm at the Fox Forest in Hillsborough, NH.

Northern red oak is one of the highest-valued species for both timber production and wildlife amenities. However, red oak is declining due to regeneration difficulties, dwindling farmland abandonment, and losses from deer browsing. Much of the available research is from outside of New England and may not apply.

This workshop will cover the ecology and management of red oak with a special emphasis on growing it in New Hampshire. The afternoon will be in the field visiting sites at Fox Forest showing crop tree release, shelterwood and group selection.

Our workshop presenters—Bill, Ken, Jeff, Mariko, and Karen—evaluated and assembled relevant information on red oak ecology, management, and wildlife habitat into the publication Ecology and Management of Northern Red Oak in New England. This workshop offers an opportunity to hear directly from the authors.

Presenters include Bill Leak, Ken Desmarais, and Mariko Yamasaki with the U.S. Forest Service and Jeff Ward with the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station.

We will be in the field for a considerable amount of time so please be prepared with insect repellant—especially for ticks. Remember your lunch.

The $25 registration fee covers morning refreshments, handouts and the new publication, and speaker costs.

This workshop has been approved for SAF 5.5 CFEs, Category 1, NHPLP Certification 8.0 CEUs
