The Department of Conservation and Recreation will hold tours of both a completed forest management project in the Federated Women’s Club State Forest as well as a planned timber harvest in Wendell State Forest on May 8th from 1 to 5:30 p.m.

The intent of the tours is to provide insight into a completed forestry operation in a forest very similar to that in the planned harvest operation. DiNardo and Hill will discuss forest management techniques used at the Federated Women’s Club SF in a predominantly oak forest and compare those planned for oak stands in Wendell State Forest.  Additionally, there will be discussions of planned forestry operations in red and white pine plantations at Wendell State Forest.  The tours will provide a view of the trees designated for harvest, and explain how harvest operations take place.  A detailed silvicultural prescription for both harvesting operations will be provided to attendees.  This tour culminates a public process that included a public meeting and a written comment period for the project.

The tour will begin at the Federation of Women’s Club State Forest at 1:00 PM. Meet at the intersection of State Forest Road and West Road in Petersham.  Access this location by driving south on State Forest Road 1.8 miles from Highway 122 in Petersham.  State Forest signs are posted on Highway 122.

The tour will continue at Wendell State Forest at approximately 4:00 PM.  Meet at the Wendell State Forest Headquarters, 392 Wendell Road, Millers Falls.

The tour will be conducted “rain or shine”.  Attendees are encouraged to dress for the weather and to wear sturdy shoes.  For additional information about the tours and DCR forest management on state forests, parks, and reservations, please contact William Hill, Management Forestry Program Supervisor, at 413-545-3891.
