The Executive Office of Environmental Affairs will hold a program at Ben & Susie Feldman’s 300 acre woodland in Athol on July 30th at 10 am to recognize the completion of 500,000 acres of private woodlands now under professional management through DCR’s Working Forest Initiative.

The Working Forest Initiative has helped pay for private professional foresters to develop nearly 2,000 Forest Stewardship Plans over 10 years on privately owned woodlands around Massachusetts.  Implementing habitat and forest improvement projects on these woodlands supports a local sustainable forest economy across rural Massachusetts and provides renewable wood products for local needs, and provides sites for outdoor recreation to connect the next generation to nature.

Taking part in the ceremony at the Feldman woods will be Environmental Secretary Matthew Beaton, the Feldmans, their forester Mike Mauri, and Mass Audubon bird biologist Jeff Ritterson.
