The colorful Monarch butterflies overwinter in the mountains of Mexico and travel thousands of miles north each year to breed before returning to Mexico in the fall. Monarchs are a species of concern due to habitat loss in Mexico and the widespread use of pesticides in farming that kills milkweed plants which are crucial to their life cycle.
Penn State Extension will hold a Monarch Butterflies: Mexico to My Garden webinar on March 31st from 7 to 8 pm ET.
Laura Jackson and her husband Mike traveled to the mountains of Mexico to visit and photograph two monarch sanctuaries with overwintering butterflies. Since her trip, she has expanded her native wildflower meadows on her property to include 3 species of milkweed, additional pollinators, and removed non-native plants.
In this webinar, Laura will discuss:
- Mysteries of monarch butterfly migration
- Opportunities to visit overwintering monarchs in Mexico
- How monarchs overwinter
- How you can help monarchs in Mexico through smart shopping at home
- How to plant native wildflower meadows to benefit monarchs and other pollinators
- Examples of pollinator programs and citizen science projects to help monarchs
- Pennsylvania Pollinator Friendly Garden Certification
