Vermont Extension will hold a Logging Costs & Productivity workshop at the UVM Extension Office in Berlin, VT on November 8th from 8 am to 3:30 pm.
This workshop, presented by Dr. Steven Bick from Northeast Forests LLC & VT Forest Business School, will demonstrate how to accurately calculate annual logging costs (cost/year & cost /ton) and apply them to specific jobs and harvesting opportunities.
The workshop will also cover how to calculate productivity as the ratio of output to effort, and how to use this information to compare weeks, months, years, and individual timber harvests.
Specific Topics Covered:
- Identifying and understanding logging costs by category.
- Throughput accounting in logging.
- Accurately estimating annual production costs.
- Allocating logging costs by ton, day, week, or month and job site.
- Understanding and calculation of productivity as the ratio of effort (machine hour) to output (loads of wood).
- The free LC Benchmark Logging App; and
- The free Log-in-Vermont Mobile App.
- Loggers and their family members who participate in the business are encouraged to attend. Free mobile apps will be used to make the calculations. Participants should bring their mobile phone and a copy of their most recent IRS Schedule C or Form 1120 to use in inputting their own cost information.
