The New York City Mass Timber Studio Presents Cohort 2 of the Mass Timber Review Series on Tuesday, January 20th from 5 to 8 pm at the Center for Architecture and on Zoom.

The NYC Mass Timber Studio aims to build industry capacity and unlock the full impacts of utilizing mass timber in lieu of more carbon intensive construction materials. Project teams have explored mass timber focus areas ranging from innovative project delivery and navigating regulatory frameworks to technical feasibility and advancing carbon reductions.

The NYC Mass Timber Studio second cohort comprises the following projects:

  • New York Climate Exchange is building a Climate Hub on Governors Island, the largest mass timber commercial project in NYC, totaling more than 140,000 square feet. The new construction portion of the project will house a world-class convening space, research labs, and classrooms for a wide range of educational and training programs. The project team includes the NY Climate Exchange, SOM, Skanska, BYC Projects, William Vitacco Associates, Buro Happold, and MNLA.
  • Stapleton B4/B5 Residential will be the largest mass timber residential development in New York City with approximately 500 units, both affordable and market rate. The project team includes Artimus, Pheonix Realty Group, GF55, and Structurecraft.
  • Soundview Recreation Center is a new 45,000-square-foot recreation center in the Bronx with mass timber structural elements. The project team includes Beyond, Snohetta, NYC Department of Parks & Recreation, NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC), LERA, Jacobs & Entech.
  • Ganeinu Academy is a 20,000-square-foot addition to an existing school in Fresh Meadows, Queens, rebuilt with robust resiliency measures, to repair damage caused by flooding during Hurricane Ida in 2021 and protect against future climate risks. The project team includes Martin Hopp Architects and Odeh Engineers.
  • Shirley Chisholm Pavilion is a 1,200-square-foot, open-air pavilion at the southeast corner of Prospect Park offering respite for park goers and a display celebrating Shirley Chisholm’s legacy. The project team includes Prospect Parks Alliance and Arup.
  • Dockbuilders Pier is a 3,100-square-foot building to support Staten Island Ferry operations. The project team includes Sage & Coombe Architects, NYC Department of Transportation (DOT), South County Post & Beam, COWI, Stantec, Socotec, and Skanska.
  • 5 Timber Houses is five 4-story houses, totaling 20,000 square feet and designed to Passive House standards with geothermal energy in Park Slope, Brooklyn. The project team includes Mesh Architectures, TYLin, EP Engineering, bldg typ, and Outdoor Habitat.
