Extensive beech understory

Cornell Cooperative Extension will hold 2 one hour Forest Connect webinars on The Legacy of Beech Bark Disease and Understory Interference in Today’s Northern Hardwoods on March 21st at noon and 7 p.m.

Beech bark disease has afflicted North America for more than a century.  As the disease syndrome moved in waves of death from the Maritime Provinces, it left behind a forest with characteristics that have become known as the “aftermath forest.”

Dr. Kimberly Bohn of Penn State Cooperative Extension will describe the progression of the “aftermath forest” following beech bark disease infestations.  Participants will learn the variety of treatment options to control interfering understory beech thickets.  Mechanical and chemical options will be presented for varying densities and sizes of beech stems, including appropriate herbicide application rates and timing.
