Which trees should you cut and which should you leave to improve a woodland property to grow timber and maintain a healthy forest?
Cheshire County Conservation District, Long View Forest, NH Timberland Owners Association, and UNH Extension will hold a Choosing and Using in a Small Woodlot workshop in East Alstead, NH on August 3rd from 3 to 5 pm.
During this workshop, foresters and the landowner will show participants how to decide which trees to leave and which trees to cut based on the landowner’s stewardship goals and interests.
The workshop will be held in a mixed wood, forty-year-old forest which is growing back after a whole-tree harvest. This is a common forest type in New England, and we hope that what you learn in these woods could be applicable in your own backyard.
There will also be a demonstration of using the log arch to extract a cut log. The log arch is a great tool for landowners to extract firewood, sawlogs, and more on their own properties and is available to rent through CCCD.
