UNH Extension and The Nature Conservancy will hold a Climate Resilient Forest Management Tour at TNC’s Surry Mountain Preserve in Gilsum, NH on July 22nd from 12:45 to 4 pm

Join us for a field tour of The Nature Conservancy’s Surry Mountain Preserve for a discussion of Climate Resilient Forest Management (CRFM) and how the TNC incorporated principles of climate resilience into their recent management.

Joanne Glode (TNC) and consulting forester Matthias Nevins (Meadowsend Consulting Co.) will walk us through a recent harvest at the preserve, including a recap of the climate considerations that were incorporated.

We’ll have a chance to see the layout of three treatment types – reserves, variable thinning, and patch cuts. There will also be an overview of the monitoring approach that’s been developed. We’ll have a chance to see some amazing northern red oaks on this property, and, unfortunately, also the recently established beech leaf disease.

This is a short-distance walking tour with many stops. Please expect to be walking through a recently harvested forest with cut treetops (slash) on the forest floor. The route will be taking are recent skid trails with lots of wood debris. There are a few steep sections on this tour.

If you have concerns about the tour, please contact Steven Roberge at (603) 862-4861 or steven.roberge@unh.edu.
