The American Chestnut Foundation will hold an online Cold Tolerance Chestnut Chat on February 18th at 11:30 am.
In this program, Forest Service plant physiologist Paul Schaberg will discuss the findings from the first (and likely only) range-wide provenance test of American chestnut, which provide insights into the range of genetic expression for the species.
Long-term measurements here highlight genetic variation among American chestnut populations to winter shoot injury, the timing of spring leaf phenology, and the severity of spring leaf frost damage. Measurements of growth from stem increment cores showcase the remarkable potential of American chestnut and provide clues on how phenology, cold injury, and climate (moisture and temperature patterns) influence radial growth.
