New Hampshire Timberland Owners Association will hold a Creating & Maintaining Forest Openings for Wildlife workshop on September 18th from 7:45 am to 1 pm at Gardner Memorial Wayside Park in Wilmot, NH.
This workshop will visit the beautiful Woods Without Gile Tree Farm owned by Ann and Marc Davis (2022 NH Tree Farmers of the Year) and will highlight numerous examples for how landowners can create and maintain different types of forest openings to attract and benefit a variety of wildlife. During this workshop we will discuss the following key topics:
How commercial timber harvesting is used to create young forest wildlife habitat
How forest openings of different sizes function as habitat for different wildlife
How wildlife use of forest openings changes over time
How to best plan and locate forest openings to benefit wildlife across the larger landscape
Considerations for creating & maintaining permanent shrubby or grass-dominated openings
Considerations for enhancing log landings & woods roads for wildlife
Considerations for attracting/discouraging beavers when timber harvesting near wetlands
Financial assistance programs to help fund habitat improvement on your land
Cost of this workshop is $15 for the general public, $30 for those wanting SAF credits.
