Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) Forester Kevin Podkowka, will lead a tour of the Ole Shaker Timber Sale at the Bates Memorial State Park in Hancock on Thursday, July 11th, from 4 to 5:30 pm. Podkowka will discuss forest management techniques in a predominantly northern hardwood forest, provide a view of the trees designated for harvest, and explain how harvest operations will take place. A detailed silviculture prescription for the harvesting operation on 173 acres of the Bates forest will be provided to attendees. This tour culminates a public process that included a public meeting and a written comment period for the project.
Participants should meet at the parking area for the Beacon Trail, in front of the gate, at Lindon W. Bates Memorial State Park on Route 20 in Hancock. (Directions listed below). The tour will be conducted “rain or shine” as indicated below. Attendees are encouraged to dress for the weather and to wear sturdy shoes. From Hancock Shaker Village: From Hancock Shaker Village travel west on Route 20 (Lebanon Mountain Road) for approximately 2.1 miles to the top of the hill. The entrance to the state park and meeting area will be on the left and a Mass DOT maintained turn-off will be on the right.
