The American Chestnut Foundation will hold a Drones and American Chestnut Restoration live Chestnut Chat on Friday, June 26th at 11:30 am EDT.
Drones, once most commonly used by hobbyists to capture aerial photography, have become much more than a leisure activity.
Today they are used for everything from monitoring and surveillance to pollinating orchards. Alex Young, regional research manager for Dropcopter, a company that uses drones to pollinate crops, combating the effects of pollinator decline, will share his experience working with a variety of fruit trees and talk about plans this summer to pollinate chestnut.
PA-NJ Chapter member Clark Beebe will also discuss his experience using a drone to locate chestnuts in Northcentral PA, and Brian Clark of the MA-RI Chapter will discuss his attempt to pollinate chestnuts with a drone in Western MA.
Check out this drone video of an American chestnut orchard grown and maintained by the MD-TACF Chapter.
