Want to help make small coldwater streams better homes for fish, birds and other wildlife?

Trout Unlimited, the Massachusetts Woodlands Institute and Franklin Land Trust will hold a Forests for Fish Workshop on Saturday, September 14th (Rain date 9/15) from 10 am to 1 pm on Tissdell Brook in Colrain, MA

This workshop will teach about native fish habitat and have a demonstration of ways to help make small coldwater streams better homes for fish, birds and other wildlife. The workshop will include a demonstration of coldwater fisheries instream restoration work on Tissdell Brook on private land in Colrain, MA.

This project is intended as a demonstration of habitat enhancement and restoration work which those stewarding similar properties can work with Trout Unlimited and other qualified professionals to implement.

The demonstration work was completed by a Trout Unlimited field crew, experienced in design and implementation of in-stream wood loading and fisheries habitat enhancement. There will be several sites where felled trees (likely Hemlock and Yellow birch) will be placed in the stream to create complex stream habitat. Appropriate permitting for this work is necessary.

Participants will learn about the animals that live in streams or riparian areas, the climate change impacts they face and how healthy streams can help slow flood waters. While making rivers better for fish, we can build resilience to climate change for our towns.

This work is part of a collaboration between Franklin Land Trust, their subsidiary Massachusetts Woodlands Institute and Trout Unlimited.
