More than one-quarter of forests in the northern United States are characterized as mixedwoods. These temperate mixedwood forests spread across nearly 47 million acres, from North Dakota to Maine and Kansas to Maryland. Yet despite their prevalence, there is much to be learned about temperate mixedwood forests.

The U S Forest Service’s Northern Research Station will hold an Insect Infestations, Prescribed Burning, and the Functioning of Oak-pine Mixedwood Forests in the Mid-Atlantic Region webinar on February 10th at 1 pm Eastern Time

This webinar, presented by Kenneth L. Clark, Michael Gallagher, David MacLean and John Kabrick, will present information on how forests consisting of oak and pine mixtures are more resistant to invasive insect damage and maintain continuity in ecosystem functioning following infestations compared to stands dominated by a single genus.  They will also discuss how recovery processes and the use of prescribed fire following infestations result in the persistence of mixedwood stands.
