A Demonstration and Discussion of Techniques Promoted by Irwin Post
Join us for an interactive workshop and brown bag lunch, exploring long-term Northern Woodlands’ contributor Irwin Post’s practice of intensively managing young forest stands. Irwin described this approach in his final article for the magazine, “Beyond Hunter-Gatherer Forestry.”
Agenda Features:
- Forest development in Vermont: land use history, stand dynamics, changing markets, and missed opportunities
- Beyond Hunter-Gatherer Forestry: The Irwin Approach
- Demonstration Stop 1: Spacing and tending in white pine
- Low Density Pine Management: the special nature and value of pine
- Overstory Management in Regenerating Stands: when is it time to remove the overstory and how might you do it best?
- Demonstration Stop 2: The new(ish) frontier in young forest tending
- Wrap Up Discussion: What does our region need in terms of young forest tending?
Please note – participants should expect extensive walking on rough terrain, and dress to be comfortable in cold weather outdoors. Activities include using simple hand tools (provided).
The workshop is free, with a suggested donation of $25. Register at: https://northernwoodlands.org/shop/item/intensive-forest-management-workshop-registration
