Spectacular Use of Wood at UMass Design Building

“Mass timber” construction- using wood as a low-carbon, cost-effective replacement for steel and concrete in multi-story buildings, is increasingly garnering attention and use in the United States. In New Hampshire, mass timber construction has particular relevance as a potential use of the state’s abundant forest resources and as a strategy for reducing the carbon intensity of new construction.

The New Hampshire Division of Forests & Lands, Northern Forest Center and UNH Cooperative Extension will hold a Mass Timber Explained: the Benefits of Building with Wood workshop at the UNH School of Law in Concord on Friday, October 11th, from 9 to 11 a.m.

This workshop will introduce mass timber technology and examples of its use in situations relevant to New Hampshire cities and towns.

Among the questions that will be discussed are:

  • What are the types of mass timber?
  • When can mass timber be used, and what is allowable under current codes?
  • How does it compare to steel and concrete in performance and cost?

The session will also discuss the climate and carbon impacts of building will mass timber, and how New Hampshire’s forests, landowners, and forest sector could participate as the mass timber sector grows.

Attendees will be eligible for 2.0 AIA/CES HSW LUs or 0.2 ICC continuing education credits. Credits are being processed by WoodWorks – Wood Products Council (AIA Provider # G516). Session attendees are also eligible for 2.0 category 2 SAF CFE credits.

Presenters will include

Marc Rivard, PE, SE, WoodWorks—Mass Timber Design and Construction: What Architects, Designers & Builders Need to Know

Alan Organschi, Gray Organschi Architecture—Urban Solutions for a Global Carbon Challenge: Timber City
