In spring 2025, the Norcross Wildlife Foundation had a prescribed burn of 28+ acres of historically fire-adapted pitch pine and scrub oak barrens.
The Native Plant Trust will hold a Prescribed Burning Field Study on Saturday, October 11th at the Norcross Wildlife Sanctuary in Wales, Mass from 11 am to 2 pm.
Prescribed burns can restore balance to vulnerable ecosystems by reducing invasives, allowing the return of rare plant species, and lowering the risk of wildfires.
Dan Jaffe Wilder, Director of Applied Ecology at Norcross, will explain about Norcross’s preparation for this work, including collaboration with key partners, and lead a walk through both burned and unburned areas to examine the impacts.
Note: Fire Ecology 101 is a prerequisite for participants in this field study.
For more information about the burn, see: https://norcrosswildlife.org/chapin-burn-2025/
Cost of this program is $75 per person.
