In spring 2025, 75 acres of Memorial Forest were prescribed burned as part of a broader habitat restoration project on the 900-acre Desert Natural Area.
The Native Plant Trust will hold a Prescribed Burning Field Study on Saturday, October 18th from 9 am to Noon at Memorial Forest in Sudbury, MA.
This tour, led by Laura Mattei, Director of Conservation at Sudbury Valley Trustees, will show how prescribed burns like this one can restore habitat that supports many declining and threatened species of wildlife, including whip-poor-will and Eastern towhee birds, frosted elfin butterflies, and wild lupine plants.
Participants can observe some of the early effects of burning, and hear about the next phase of SVT’s work.
Note: Fire Ecology 101 is a prerequisite for participants in this field study.
