The Vermont Forestry Foundation will hold a silviculture workshop, Regeneration Harvesting in a Challenging Environment, at the property of David Freeley on Alexander Road in Leyden, Massachusetts on October 6th from 8:30 AM-3:30 pm.

Active forest management on conserved properties utilizing a variety of silvicultural systems in the presence of wildlife predation, invasive species and their control will be the main topics. We will also review the planting of white oak & burr oak saplings in the patch cuts this spring.

The Freeley Forest is a 209 acre tract consisting of hemlock, red oak, black birch, white pine and associated species with a history of active management. A conservation easement with the Franklin Land Trust is on a third of the property.

In the fall and early winter of 2016/2017, 76 acres were treated with a variety of harvest strategies to implement uneven aged management, especially with removal of low quality, weevil impacted white pine and hemlock with woolly adelgid.

This harvest was conducted with feller buncher, grapple skidder and processed with pull through de-limber and slasher utilizing low grade as pulpwood not chipped. Treatments included large and small group selection, thinning, and various shelterwood treatments. A previous harvest in adjacent unit was conducted in early winter 2013 using cable skidder, bunching tractor and chainsaws. Treatments were single tree and small group selection.
