The Vermont Forestry Foundation will hold a Regeneration Harvesting in a Challenging Environment silviculture workshop featuring shelterwood systems in Cavendish, Vermont on May 4th from 8:30 AM-3:30 PM.

We will be reviewing the shelterwood system and its variations in Cavendish VT on 4 lots, with three stops. We start with a traditional pine shelterwood, establishment cut in 2009, and removal cut last fall (Oscarson lot). We will see uncut areas, pine and hardwood regeneration released, and some overstory retention areas.

The next stop will see pine with long term thinning and understory establishment (Stowell lot), and then deferred shelterwood in pine with advanced hardwood regeneration where the overstory has been recently removed (Stewart lot). These pine stands are transitional to northern hardwoods.

Our final stop (Puska lot; with lunch) will be a northern hardwood-hemlock stand with 2016 treatments ranging from clearcut, low density shelterwood, standard density shelterwood, and uncut areas including hemlock retention. This was previously high-graded with advanced beech regeneration and will give us a wide range of treatments to review with regeneration getting started.
