The Vermont Forestry Foundation is hosting a Regeneration Silviculture and Invasive Plant Control workshop at the Leader Family Trust property on Westminster Road, Putney, VT on May 3rd from 8:30 am to 5 pm
The Leader Family Trust Forest is a 470-cre woodland with a long history of active management. It includes a wide range of silvicultural treatments including patch cuts, small clearcuts, shelterwood and selection methods. Invasive species management, including nasty buckthorn, is a main feature.
In 2018, two 6 acre patch clearcuts in low grade pine with dense buckthorn understory were cut without herbicide treatment. The goal was to use organic/mechanical treatment to replace the pine with hardwood regeneration by intense scarification. Now hardwood saplings are emerging through the buckthorn sprouts.
