Are you a woman woodland owner, aspiring owner or land manager? Do you have a farm tractor that you are thinking about using in the woods? While tractors have their limitations, when equipped properly they can play an important role in working in your woodlot.

Women in the Woods will hold a Safe Tractor Use in Your Woodlot workshop at the New Hampshire State Forest Nursery in Boscawen, NH on October 15th from 9 am to 4:30 pm.

This introductory workshop will show how you can safely and productively use a farm tractor as a tool in forest management (primarily harvesting firewood). Participants will learn the parts and functions of the tractor and tractor winches. Additional demonstration style instruction will focus on tractor applications, matching tractor size with specific tasks, safety features and practices, attachments, and basic winching and log skidding techniques.

Participants will have hands-on opportunity to work with winching logs. We will also discuss tips and techniques to recognize hazards and minimize risks when working with trees.

Meet and share experiences with other women woodland owners and managers while learning from demonstrations and discussions led by our experienced instructors.

Rain Date will be Saturday, October 22, 2022

Instructors for this workshop will be Jon Martin from Martin Forestry Consulting, and Wendy Weisiger of the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests.

Cost of this workshop is $25 per person.

Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for each participant includes: an integrated forestry hardhat (with built in hearing and eye/face protection) or a standard hard hat with separate eye and ear protection, good-fitting leather work gloves (be sure these are snug and not loose fitting), and leather boots with a steel or composite safety toe.

Bring a water bottle, snacks, and your lunch.

Coffee will be available in the morning, please bring your own coffee mug and water bottle for the day.

Bring a camp chair to sit on during the workshop and lunch.

*Please note that this entire event will be held outdoors, please dress appropriately and bring extra layers as needed. A porta potty will be available on site. The workshop will begin in barn at the parking area of the nursery and then we will caravan a short distance on a well-maintained dirt road to the field site which has ample parking, so you can have access to your vehicle throughout the day.
