The New England Forestry Foundation and the Northeast Wilderness Trust will host a 90 minute Saying Yes to Wildlands and Woodlands webinar on December 15th from 4 to 5:30 pm ET.

This webinar will focus on the complementary conservation strategies of wildlands (forests largely left in a natural and undisturbed condition) and woodlands (forests managed to provide wood products). The long-running debate over whether to manage forests or leave them undisturbed is relevant to land trusts, landowners, legislators, and citizens alike… particularly in the context of biodiversity collapse and climate crisis.

This webinar will feature a conversation between Northeast Wilderness Trust Executive Director Jon Leibowitz and New England Forestry Foundation Executive Director Robert Perschel, two compelling speakers who bring years of either wildland or woodland conservation experience to the table.

Achieving the ambitious land protection goals laid out in the Wildlands & Woodlands Vision—which calls for conservation of 70 percent of New England as forests—requires a full suite of conservation approaches in order to create a resilient, interconnected landscape that will provide for the health of people and nature for generations to come. Northeast Wilderness Trust and New England Forestry Foundation approach these ambitious goals from very different places on the conservation spectrum, yet they share a common belief in and mutual respect for the importance and urgency of one another’s work.

New England Forestry Foundation and Northeast Wilderness Trust’s leaders will start by weaving together their different perspectives to articulate a common, expanded framework for forests as a natural climate solution. They will then switch roles, each speaking for the mission and goals of the other. Giving examples from real conservation projects and current initiatives, they will show how a dual approach of conserving both woodlands and wildlands can result in a better forested landscape for all.
