UNH Extension and the Northeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association (NELMA will hold a The Basics of Grading Eastern White Pine Lumber workshop at the UNH Sawmill in Durham, NH on October 4th from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Basics of Grading Eastern White Pine Lumber is presented by the Northeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association (NELMA), the lumber grading authority for the softwood industry located in the Northeastern and Great Lakes regions. NELMA published the Standard Grading Rules for Northeastern Lumber which provides the details of allowable characteristics within each grade.

Director of Inspection Services Matt Pomeroy will provide the expertise for the workshop that will include classroom instructions in addition to hands-on review of the grades with examples of finished lumber.

Workshop attendees will learn the basics of evaluating the major characteristics important to grading eastern white pine appearance grades such as measuring knots, knot classification and knot quantity limitations, evaluating pitch, bark inclusions, and many more important characteristics.

The four common grades of Finish, Premium, Standard, & Industrial as well as the grades of C & D Select will be the focus in this exercise. Please note that completing this workshop does not qualify an individual as a certified grader.

Lunch will be provided.

A minimum of 12 participants are required to run this class.

Cost of this workshop is $125 for NHTOA members, $200 for non-members
