In 1991, the 1,183-acre Pottapaug Natural Area(PNA) in Petersham was deliberately set aside from typical forest management. Currently designated as an ‘Area of Special Management Restrictions’ at Quabbin, the forest here will eventually develop old growth characteristics that are not commonly found in younger forests.
The DCR Division of Water Supply Protection will hold an Understanding Forest Growth in the Pottapaug Natural Area tour on October 27th from 9 am to 1 pm in Petersham
Participants on this tour will learn about the history of this area and see some of the interesting landscape features it contains. They will also see how DWSP is collecting long-term data to help researchers understand forest growth and development and the variety of ecosystem benefits provided by both managed and reserved forests across Massachusetts.
The tour will meet at Gate 40 off Route 32A in Petersham and carpool to the location of the PNA. We will be walking both on trail and off trail through the woods. Please dress appropriately for weather and insects, wear safe, suitable footwear, and bring water.
