Berkshire Environmental Action Team (BEAT) will lead a free Winter Tree Identification Walk at the Betty Maitland Memorial Forest along Route 8A in Heath on Saturday, March 22 at 10:30 am.

This event will last approximately 1.5 to 2 hours and will involve slow-paced stops along the way. Participants will be outdoors for the duration, so appropriate attire for winter weather is recommended.

Winter offers a unique opportunity to learn tree and shrub identification, as the absence of leaves reveals features often overlooked during other seasons.

On this guided walk, participants will learn to identify trees by examining twigs, bark, and overall structure—characteristics that are visible even when trees are bare.

Led by a local naturalist and tree enthusiast, the walk will include tips and tricks for recognizing tree species, whether in winter or throughout the year.

This event, organized in collaboration with the Heath Public Library and co-sponsored by the Franklin Land Trust, is open to the public. Space is limited, so those interested are encouraged to reserve their spot by emailing chelsey@thebeatnews.org as soon as possible.

This tree walk is part of a grant awarded by the Woodlands Partnership of Northwest Massachusetts to Berkshire Environmental Action Team, a nonprofit based in Pittsfield.
