The American Forest Foundation and the Empire State Forest Products Association will hold a Forest Carbon & Family Forests online program on how family forest landowners can participate in emerging carbon markets on Monday, December 7th from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Forests are the most powerful clean air technology on earth. By providing a continuing cycle of growing, harvesting and regenerating, active forest management has the potential to enhance a forest’s ability to sequester and store carbon and improves resiliency, maintaining the ability to sequester carbon in the future.

Private working forests play a critical role in a nature-based solution to mitigate climate change and in New York that involves thousands of family forest landowners engaged in climate solutions.  One such solution is carbon markets, whereby family forest landowners get paid to remove carbon from the atmosphere and store it in their forests.

To help address cost and technical barriers for landowners implementing sustainable and climate smart forestry practices, markets, specifically, carbon markets, are an effective mechanism. Yet, current forest carbon programs present challenges for the majority of family forest owners to participate.

The program will also address the role that family forests will have in meeting New York’s ambitious climate goals under the Climate Leadership & Community Protection Act.
