Franklin Land Trust will hold an Exploring Stream Life and Watershed Connections program at the Edge Hill Conservation Area in Ashfield on Thursday, June 18th, from 4 to 6 pm.
In this hands-on workshop, get your feet wet and collect and identify aquatic macroinvertebrates in a local stream to see how these tiny organisms act as indicators of water quality, habitat condition, and overall ecosystem health!
Through sampling and observation, we will explore how past land use, surrounding forests, and riparian areas influence stream life. This workshop will teach you what these “bugs” can teach us about ongoing restoration efforts in the watershed.
Drs. Mike Cole and Kate Abbott are freshwater ecologists and SFS-certified taxonomists at Cole Ecological, Inc. in Greenfield, MA, where they specialize in using aquatic macroinvertebrates to assess the condition of streams and rivers. Their work focuses on bioassessment, water quality monitoring, and understanding how disturbance and restoration shape aquatic ecosystems.
