Avenza Maps App Workshop November 15th

Avenza Maps App Workshop November 15th

The Massachusetts Forest Alliance will hold an Avenza Maps Workshop at Harvard Forest in Petersham on Tuesday, November 15th, from 9 am to 2:30 pm.  This workshop is funded through a grant from the U. S. Forest Service through the University of Michigan.

This workshop will focus on the use of mapping apps – in particular, the market-leading Avenza Maps – in forestry. Imagine a forester creating a forest cutting plan map electronically, and sending it to the logger and DCR service forester with the landing, skid roads, stands to be harvested, and protected areas all marked. And then imagine the logger using the map live on their phone, tablet, or even on their logging equipment instrument panel while harvesting – seeing exactly where they are located every second, with warnings when approaching property lines or protected areas – even in remote areas without cell service! This is all possible with Avenza Maps.

The program will begin with a comprehensive training on the Avenza Maps app with Kate Brillinger, Support Manager for Avenza Maps. After lunch, we’ll head to a nearby woodlot scheduled for a timber harvest for a field tour where attendees will be able to experience the app firsthand on their own phone, seeing how it can be used during a harvest.

Cost of the workshop (including lunch) is $25 for current MFA members, and $40 for non-members.

This workshop has been approved for the following continuing education credits:

  • 5.0 Massachusetts Forester Credits in Category II
  • 4.0 SAF Forester Credits in Category I
  • 2.0 Connecticut Forest Practitioner CEUs
  • 5 Massachusetts Timber Harvester Credits

Attendees who are not current Avenza Maps Pro users will receive a substantial discount (via code handed out at the workshop) on the first year of Pro membership – paying just $99.99 instead of $144.99 – a savings of $45, more than the cost of the workshop! There is no obligation to purchase the Pro version – you won’t need it for the workshop – but it would be necessary if you’re going to be regularly importing forester-created maps. If you’re not a current Pro user, do NOT buy the Pro version before the workshop, as we won’t be able to offer you the discount.
