Extensive beech understory

Shade tolerant American beech sprouts can spread so prolifically in the understory of northern hardwood stands that they prevent the regeneration of other species, potentially creating a monoculture of low value beech.

The Vermont Woodlands Association will hold an Understory Management & Beech Control tour on Wednesday, August 3rd from 9 to 11 am at 894 Howard Hill Road in Andover, Vermont.

This tour will look at an area of northern hardwood forest where American beech was out of control in the understory. Two years ago, every beech tree in the area was severed/girdled to promote the growth of non-beech tree species.

The tour will look at the successes and shortcomings of this project, discuss future management options, and share on understory management and beech control in general.

Due to parking restrictions, limited registration is possible and pre registration is required.  To participate in this program, register at  Understory Management/Beech Control – Vermont Woodlands Association
