UNH Extension, the New Hampshire Division of Forests & Lands, and the Granite State SAF will hold a North Country Forest Health Workshop at Weeks State Park in Lancaster, NH on August 5th from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm.

During this all-day, “in the field” workshop, small groups will rotate through six stations at Weeks State Park. At each station there will be a unique set of insects, invasive plants, or diseases that a specialist will show you, let you handle, and then moderate a discussion of how these pests could influence your management in the North Country. Bring your own samples or pictures of pests or damage you’re seeing in the woods and our experts will ID it. Gather that weird forest insect or damage and stump the experts!

Station 1:  Balsam woolly adelgid, spruce budworm, hemlock woolly adelgid, caliciopsis and other various softwood pests.  Allison Kanoti, State Entomologist, Maine Forest Service and Kyle Lombard, Forest Health Program Manager, NH Division of Forests and Lands.

Kyle will provide samples of infected specimens and show lumber cut from infected pine trees. The State will provide damage from the other softwood pests will be on display and updates on distribution and outbreak status.

Station 2: White pine needlecast, beech leaf disease, beech bark disease, and various other pathogens. Cameron McIntire, Plant Pathologist, US Forest Service.

Cameron will show signs and symptoms of various needle blights that have caused defoliation and yellowing in pine. A discussion of ongoing research related to potentially mitigating silviculture practices will take place.  Also, beech leaf & bark diseases will be presented – a discussion of an old beech problem and a new one.

Station 3: Spongy moth, forest tent caterpillar, saddled prominent, maple leaf cutter, and other hardwood defoliators. Emily Meacham, Protection Forester, Vermont Division of Forests.

Emily will have samples of various relevant defoliating insects including forest tent caterpillar and other insects that are common this year. Topics include monitoring for FTC and Spongy Moth and recommendations for control and management strategies during an outbreak.

Station 4: “What is that?” Dode Gladders, Sullivan County Extension Forester.

Back by popular demand, Dode will have hands on samples of all those insects and diseases you walk by in the woods and say “what is that?” Stuff like pine bark adelgid, leaf galls, sugar maple borer, and oh so much more.

Station 5: Emerald Ash Borer. Bill Davidson, Forest Health Specialist, NH Division of Forests and Lands.

At this stop Bill will have samples of various life stages of EAB, damaged ash trees, and examples of blonded ash trees. Topics include silviculture recommendations, pesticide options, survey methods, quarantine requirements, and bio-control programs.

Station 6: Upland invasive plant species. Steven Roberge, Extension Forestry Specialist.

Steve will have samples of invasive plants for you to get familiar with to heighten your identification skills and options for treatment and control.  He will also discuss species that are close by and would benefit from “early detection/rapid response” management.

Cost of the workshop is $25 per person.   Participants should bring their lunch.
